President's Update - September, 2007
Now that our mids are back in the arms of Mother B (Bancroft Hall) we can all rest easy - at least until you get those calls about the changes that are in store for them. But, as we have all learned change is the name of the game - not only at USNA, but also in life.
Welcome to all of the new plebe parents. We had a great Welcome Aboard Picnic in May and sent care packages to help out during the summer. Hopefully they arrived in good shape and were enjoyed by all. Now that it is over, maybe your plebes can say that the summer really did fly by! As the mother of a firstie, I can truthfully say that Katie's time at the Academy has indeed flown by - at least on our end. It is very exciting, but also a little scary, to think that soon she will be off on a ship somewhere, doing who knows what. Well, one step at a time.
The planning for the All-Academy Ball is proceeding at break-neck speed, thanks to the wonderful organization and perserverance of Myrna and Rea Myers. The next meeting is schedule for September 8. Please contact Myrna if you have not already volunteered to help out. She is still in need of some volunteers.
Firstie Parents' Weekend is right around the corner. Firstie Parents should have received a packet in the mail with information about events and a schedule. In addition to that information, please check for updates and new scheduling information at www.usna.edu/Schedules/08pw/htm. Some things may have changed. As far as I know, the Glee Club concert has been changed to Saturday instad of Friday. There are also tours of Bancroft on the schedule now. The 1/C Luncheon in King Hall is set for Friday, September 14. Your midshipman must get tickets from the MWF office beforehand. Information on the list serve has also talked about a tour of a ship that will probably be available. I don't know much more than that, but I have put that on my list to ask my mid about. I hope to see you all there - it sounds like a great time. As I told Katie (who dutifully rolled her eyes at me), this is my last chance for a parent/teacher conference. She also wasn't too fond of my suggestion that she email me the topics she is studying so I can participate fully in her classes. Her answer, "Just sit there and be quiet, Mom."
Navy has won their first football game and hopefully may be on their way to a bowl game. As I understand it they will play in the Poinsettia Bowl on December 20 if they win a minimum of 6 games. That works well for our ball as their bowl game would not interfere with the Ball on December 29. Let's keep our finger crossed for them and cheer them on - Go Navy! Beat Army!
It anyone is interested in helping to arrange an Navy/Air Force watch party or a Navy/Notre Dame watch party, please let me know. A couple of years ago we were invited by the Air Force parents to a watch party and had a great time.
As always, if there is other news out there that I have not included, please let me know. Hope all is well and everyone has clear sailing!

President's
Update - 2007
Hope everyone had a great holiday and both mids and parents are getting
through the Dark Ages. On Saturday February 3 parents met at the home of Jerry
and Janet Marten (Abel '07) to pack Dark Ages packages. The mids should have
received them and be enjoying their goodies by now.
Air Force did a great job with the All Academy Ball and a good time was had by all. Watch the website for photos from the ball which should be appearing soon. Myrna and Rea Myers (Travis '09) have graciously volunteered to serve as chairs for the 2007 All-Academy Ball hosted by USNA Mo-Kan Parents' Club. They have already done a great deal of preliminary work. Fundraising is the biggest need we have right now. We would like to raise $10,000. (I know Air Force raised about $7,500. Myrna has prepared a Ball Update which includes information about fundraising, sponsorships, and ways in which everyone can help make this a success. Feel free to email her at mlmyers@swbell.net or call her at 816-228-3685 to let her know how you can help.
Class of '10 parents, if you are interested in joining the USNA Parents' Club Board we are looking for another member. This would put you in line to be president beginning int eh spring of '09. The perk to this position is preferred seating at graudation. let me know if you are interested, first come first served.
Class of '07 parents, I will send more information later, but plan on getting together with the other '07 MO-KAN parents during commissioning week.
President's Update - January 9, 2006
I am certain that everyone enjoyed their time with their mid over the holiday and that the time went too quickly. I pray they are all safely back in Mother B's arms and have a great second semester.
Athlete Update
Here is an update on our Navy athletes. Byron McCoy number 35 ('07) had some outstanding blocks and tackles in the Poinsettia Bowl victory. Leonard Green ('06) is helping the Men's Basketball team to a 6-5 season so far. He is averaging about 14 minutes playing time per game. Travis Myers ('09) is a football cheerleader and now is into cheering at the basketball season. John Jarred ('07) is one of only three Navy wrestlers to place in the top 8 at the Southern Scuffle. If there are any other activities your mid is involved in and you want me to share, just let me know.
All-Academy Ball - December 30, 2005
Navy was well represented this year at the All-Academy Ball, with 22 mids, as well as a Navy ROTC young man and several parents. We were the best represented Academy (Air Force and West Pint each had 14). It helped that our Bowl game was before Christmas. It was a lovely evening. Each mid received a door prize ranging from Ipods, to DVD players, to Best Buy gift certificates. Wet Point parents have hosted this event for several years, but are sharing the sponsorship. The 2006 Ball will be hosted by the Air Force Academy parents and Navy parents have been asked to host the 2007 Ball. Look for the photos on our website!
Website Update
The website is a work-in-progress. Check back often for updates. If you have any pictures or items to update the site Sandy Wood would appreciate your help. Her email address is swood36@hotmail.com.
Membership
Membership in the USNA Mo-Kan Parents Club helps the club to provide support for parents and midshipmen. Major activities include a Welcome-Aboard picnic in June, Dark Ages care packages, Firsties brunch, Mo-Kan membership pins, watch parties for the Army-Navy game, and a wealth of information and important links and support for parents. Cost of a family membership is $30. For more information check the membership page or contact president Marla Rinne at mrinne79@hotmail.com.
Mo-Kan Pins
The MO-KAN USNA Parents Club will provide up to two pins per paid family membership. Check the Mo-Kan pins page for more information and a membership form. Extra pins may be purchased for $7.50 per pin.
Dark Ages Care Packages
Dark Ages Care package party and potluck will be Saturday, January 28, at 5p.m. It will be at the home of Tim and Rebecca Bock, 10615 W. 99th St., Overland Park, KS 66214. Bring a dish or two to share. Pop, as well as plates, napkins, etc. will be provided. We will use the flat rate square boxes to fill, so they are bigger than the video boxes we used last year, so we will need more items. We will have about 36 boxes to pack. Any individual wrapped snacks will be great. If you can not attend and want to donate money for postage that would be appreciated (each costs $7 to mail). We will only be sending boxes to the mids whose parents have paid 2005-06 dues to the MoKan Parents Club. If you have a blue membership form included in this letter, you can still join our group. We hope to be able to get our food eaten, boxes packed and also attend the new movie Annapolis. SInce it is scheduled to open in January it should be open by then, but we won't know showtimes yet. We would appreciate RSVP's to either Rebecca at t.bock@earthlink.net, phone 913-888-5849 or to me mrinne79@hotmail.com, phone 816-628-6040.
Commissioning Gifts
Firstie parents who haven't paid their dues, it isn't too late!! I will be ordering the commissioning gifts for the firsties the first part of February. Again, due to budget restraints, we can only purchase the gifts for the firsties whose parents are members of our group.
Welcome Aboard Picnic - Saturday, June 10, 2006
Our Welcome Aboard Picnic for the class of '10 and the NAPS/Foundation students will be Saturday, June 10, 2006. We can have it at Kearney High School again, but welcome other suggestions for location.
tAir Force/Navy Watch Party 2006
The Air Force parents were gracious enough to invite us to their watch party for the Air Force/Navy game. It would be nice for us to have a watch party and invite them for the '06 game. We need someone to host. The club would help with the expense.
HELP Is Needed!
I need your help in locating the parents of a couple midshipmen from our area. Due to changes I no longer have current addresses for the parents of Rory Broughton and Anthony Roa. Any help with this would be appreciated.
The Mo-Kan Parents Club is still looking for representatives of the Class of '08 to serve on our board. Please consider this opportunity. I believe we have a volunteer from the Class of '09.
Sincerely,
Marla Rinne
